UNILAG STUDENTS PROTEST NAME CHANGE

As part of the celebations of Democracy day, on the 29th of May, 2012, President Goodluck Jonathan announced the University of Lagos will now be recognised as Mashood Abiola University. I was near by when the angry students took to the street to protest against the sudden name change. They mounted road blocks, causing vehicles to divert towards other routes. On Wednesday they took to the third mainland bridge and held commuters to a standstill for several hours before the appropriate officials got involved and diverted traffic towards other routes. The protest has been on for about 3days. Presently the school has shut-down activities for two weeks in a bid to contain the situation.
The timing and manner in which Jona acted caused an uproar. The Senate was not contacted nor aware of the name change. The University just lost it's VC and had activites scheduled this week for his burial(Tuesday- Thursday). We have lots of major pressing issues but his focus is else where obviously. I sympathize with the students and as an alumni of UNILAG now MAUL, I'm certainly not amused. No thanks to Jona.
